Google is preparing to update the user interface of Gmailits e-mail service used by 1.8 billion people around the world. In fact, starting from 8 February, the release of the new version of the home page of the service. Starting from that date and progressively around the world, the style of the platform will experience substantial updates. And from the beginning of next summer these changes will be permanent, so it will no longer be possible to use the old version. But only for Workspace users.
Big G’s intention is – as always, on the other hand, in every update of every interface – to render everything simpler and more satisfying. The tools will therefore be available more quickly, without having to jump between different tabs or get lost in subsections. From the side menu, which will remain on the far left, the incoming mail, the chats (Meet, Chat and Spaces) and the other sections will be accessible but in a different way than now, in which the different services overlap into a single column forcing users to scroll.
The notification bubbles to indicate the number of messages to be read in the different boxes, aligning with the smartphone logics, and the search bar will become more granular, allowing the user to search not only in emails but also in chat conversations. In short, maximum continuity between mail and messaging.
The update distribution phase, perfectly in the Material You style (the new design language presented during the last Google I / O), is divided into three phases: from 8 February and for two weeks it will be reserved for Rapid Release domains, from 22 February for all the others. Then, from April, the activation of the new interface will be automatic for all Workspace users (ie paying), but for a few weeks it will be possible to manually restore the classic version. From the end of the second quarter (therefore around June) the renewed interface will be the only one available, no backtrack possible.
The update is for now reserved, as mentioned, for Workspace users. But in all likelihood, over the course of the year, it will come for everyone. Even for those who use e-mail for personal needs.
