Gmail is becoming a universal app. Now you can call through it

Google is committed to making Gmail more than just an email service. The search giant is set to unveil a major update that will bring direct Google Meet integration to the Gmail app. This means that users will be able to make voice and video calls, in addition to text messages and correspondence via e-mail. Google says the Meet app will someday also be able to make calls.

The company presented this feature as the equivalent of “spontaneous” office chats in a hybrid work environment, where some employees work remotely. Now Gmail is essentially Microsoft’s Outlook counterpart, which combines email, calendar, and contacts. Gmail, in turn, will become the central hub for email, personal and group chats, as well as video conferencing and calling.

The updated mail service will have tabs: Mail, Chat, Spaces and Meet. The company says users will be able to hide tabs they don’t need to avoid cluttering the interface. The changes will first become available to corporate customers, after which the new Gmail features will begin to appear for all other users.
