Gmail may not send notifications to smartphone when using desktop client

Google is currently in the process of rolling out new features for the desktop Gmail web client. Gmail now offers the option to pause notifications on your smartphone if you’re actively using the desktop client.

The source describes a new option to pause mobile notifications while the desktop client is active. So far, Google hasn’t announced this feature on their support pages, but it’s already working for some.

A message appears in the pop-up window: “Pause mobile notifications while you are using this device. To pause Gmail mobile notifications while you’re active on this device, let your browser determine whether you’re active or not. Click “Continue” and then “Allow” when prompted by the browser.”

Clicking on the “Continue” button caused a permission request to “learn when you are actively using this device”, after which the function became active. There is no option in the Gmail settings menu to manually enable this feature or disable it once activated. However, the permission can be revoked in Chrome’s settings under Settings > Security & Privacy > Site Settings > Advanced Permissions. Gmail uses the “Use Your Device” permission for this feature.

In the near future, the function should become available to all users.
