After six months of development, GNOME 40, a desktop environment for UNIX systems, was released. This is the first version of GNOME with the new numbering scheme (the previous version was 3.38), which has been migrated to GTK 4. Future fixes and updates will be numbered 40.1, 40.2, and so on. Major releases will be released semi-annually, meaning GNOME 41 is expected this fall. The current version of GNOME is already included in the beta version of the Fedora 34 operating system.
One of the major changes in GNOME 40 is horizontal orientation and a redesigned interface. The dock is now positioned at the bottom with dividers between docked and running applications. Browse mode virtual desktops are also laid out horizontally and displayed as a continuously scrolling ribbon. In this form, open program windows with icons and titles are more clearly displayed when you hover over them. Users can navigate between workspaces using the mouse, keyboard, or new gestures on touchscreen devices. Other visual changes worth noting are rounded bottom edges in many major applications, antialiased borders, larger scrollbars, and a unified sidebar styling.

GNOME 40 has improved the multi-monitor experience so that the desktop switcher is now shown on all screens when customizing the desktop display. The developers have added a new weather application with an interface that adapts to the size of the window. The weather forecast can be hourly for 2 days and general for 10 days.

The application manager has changed the logic for working with updates to reduce the number of reminders. Improved the appearance of banners and the recommendation carousel. Information about recent updates is now provided for each application, as well as information about the installation source.

The Nautilus file manager has received support for sorting by file creation date and now provides more accurate information about the predicted execution time of operations. Added the ability to extract data from password-protected archives, as well as to automatically complete the input using tabs.

Changes also took place in the Mutter manager, Epiphany browser, GNOME Maps program, keyboard settings, Wi-Fi and many other shell elements. In total, there are more than 24 thousand changes, in the implementation of which 822 developers participated. More information can be found on the official website of the project.
