The GNOME Foundation, a non-profit organization, has released GNOME 41, the first minor GUI update for UNIX-like systems since GNOME 40 in the new version numbering. Most of the changes were made to applications.
Application Center
The App Center app for installing other apps has been redesigned. App Cards are more informative and include information about the presence of mobile support, age rating, and links to resources.
Connections
The GNOME desktop has added the Connections application, a remote desktop client that supports RDP and VNC. Connections will replace the legacy Vinagre application and related functionality in GNOME Boxes.
Options
Two new sections have been added to the application for managing system and device settings. In the “Multitasking” section, you can turn off the “hot corner”, “active edges”, fix the number of workspaces. Some of these functions were available in the “Extras. GNOME Settings ”(GNOME Tweaks), which is installed separately.
The “Mobile network” section is displayed if there is a built-in or connected cellular modem. It allows you to choose your preferred network type and control how your mobile Internet works when roaming. Supports work with multiple SIM-cards and modems.
GNOME 40 introduced a system of power consumption modes, three modes are available: “Performance”, “Balanced” and “Power Saving”. GNOME 41 added a mode selection to the System Status menu and also introduced an automatic “Power Saving” mode when the battery was low.
Calls
In addition to the Settings section, GNOME 41 adds a Calls application for making cellular calls. The app was originally developed by Purism and used in Pure OS for the Librem 5 smartphone.
Other innovations
- There were cosmetic changes in the Music app, such as a new playbar and rounding of the corners of the covers.
- Calendar has learned to import events from iCalendar (* .ics) files.
- Files, also known as Nautilus, now has the ability to create encrypted archives with a password.
- Improved modification of the “Calculator” window. As the window expands, additional buttons will be displayed.
- Improved support for the dark theme in the “Web Browser”.
- Hotkeys for increasing or decreasing the font size have been added to the “Text Editor”.
- Improved performance. The code for Mutter, the GNOME Shell window manager, has been cleaned up.
How to try it?
The updated apps are already available separately on Flathub. GNOME 41 is expected to appear on Ubuntu 21.08 and Fedora 35.
The GNOME developers also release nightly builds of their own GNOME OS distribution, available for testing in the GNOME Boxes virtual machine.
