The Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, told the CNN Brazil which intends to double the forecast budget for scientific research at Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation).
The federal agency, internationally recognized for having developed technology that expanded national agricultural production, now has more than 90% of its budgetary resources allocated to payroll and structural maintenance.
The new minister said that his goal, at first, is to double the money for scientific research, going from R$ 150 million to 300 million.
And, in the medium and long term, increase research resources to a percentage of 30%, reducing the payroll and structural maintenance budget to 70%.
The minister explained that the reduction to 70% does not mean closing buildings or dismissing employees, but an increase in the total budget.
Fávaro takes over the portfolio with the challenge of resuming dialogue with the European Union and reducing the resistance of agribusiness segments to the PT government.
He must still participate in the negotiations for the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur.
European countries were required to send a “side letter” to South American countries with new environmental preservation goals for the agreement to be closed.
