Goalkeeper Weverton's aunt dies after police action at her home in Acre

Maria José Pereira, aged 67, died last Tuesday (13) after falling ill during a Military Police operation at her home, in the Pista neighborhood, in Rio Branco. The elderly woman was the aunt of goalkeeper Weverton, a Palmeiras athlete.

According to the family's report, at around 8:30 pm on Thursday (8), PM agents invaded the residence without a warrant, looking for one of Maria José's children, Weverton's cousin, who has been in prison for two years for the crime of theft.

When the family explained that the man was under arrest, the police used pepper spray on the elderly woman, her daughters who were present during the approach and her underage grandchildren.

In a statement, the General Command of the Military Police offered condolences to the family and informed the opening of a Military Police Inquiry (IPM) to investigate the conduct of the police officers involved.

The OAB of Acre published a note rejecting the attack also suffered by the family's lawyer, who was pushed and had access to her clients denied at the Flagrantes Police Station.

The moment of arrests

A CNN lawyer Helane Christina, who represents Maria José's family, said that the police officers arrived at the house using aggressive language and looked for a reason to fine the motorcycle of one of the elderly woman's daughters, who had arrived at the house during the approach.

“When the agents left, Maria José, who suffered from heart problems, was already feeling ill, and one of her daughters shouted at the police. They stopped the car and returned in an uncontrolled and aggressive manner. The sisters ran into the house, but they entered the room and arrested them both. One of them is full of bruises”, says the lawyer, who was called to the Flagrantes Police Station after the arrests for contempt.

“They were arrested, and that's all that happened. The mother was there the whole time, holding the waist of one of her daughters, begging him not to take them”, continued the lawyer, referring to images of the moment of the action.

The lawyer also highlighted that the crime of contempt does not justify home invasion, provided for in article 5 of the Federal Constitution. She says that after the approach, family members who stayed at the house called SAMU for Maria José, who was taken to the emergency room in the city of Rio Branco.

The elderly woman was hospitalized for six days, until 5 am on the 13th, when she had a heart attack due to the accumulation of water in her lungs. Even after being stabilized, she suffered a cardiac arrest and died.

Another video shows Helane Christina arriving at the police station on the night of the disturbance and being pushed by the same police officer who carried out the arrests, Sergeant Manoel Ribeiro do Nascimento Neto. He tried to prevent the woman from reaching the customers.

“The Commission for Women Lawyers understands that this is a case of misogyny and repudiates any excess of physical order in the face of law, […] notably criminal lawyers who live daily with hostile situations regarding gender”, says the OAB’s rejection note.

A CNN He tried to contact the Weverton player's advisors, but did not receive a response until the publication of this report.
