A crowd gathered in the northern Moroccan province of Chefchaouen on Monday to attend the funeral of five-year-old Rayan Aourram, who died after being trapped in a well for four days.
Hundreds of people carried Rayan’s coffin and buried him two days after his death. Rayan was confirmed dead last Saturday (5) by authorities after a rescue attempt failed to save him.
The five-year-old boy had been in jail since last Tuesday (1st) before being pulled out by rescuers, but did not survive, state media reported.
Rayan’s parents were taken to the cemetery in an ambulance, distressed and in tears, as seen on local broadcaster Chouf TV. “God be with my son,” his father Khaled Aourram told Chouf.
Rayan’s rescue efforts took over much of the country with the hashtag #SaveRayan, trending in North Africa and other parts of the world.
The child was trapped in a well over 30 meters deep in the province of Chefchaouen.
Rayan’s mother said he was playing nearby before disappearing and that she quickly called authorities after finding out what had happened.
demonstrations of mourning
Rayan’s death generated an outpouring of grief as world leaders offered condolences to his family.
King Mohammed VI of Morocco offered condolences to Rayan’s family in a phone call, according to a statement from the Royal Palace.
“Following the tragic accident that took the life of the child Rayan Oram, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God protect him, made a phone call to Mr. Khaled Oram and Mrs. Wassima Khersheesh, the parents of the deceased,” said the communicated.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he shared the pain felt by Rayan’s family and the people of Morocco.
“Tonight I want to say to little Rayan’s family and the Moroccan people that we share his pain,” Macron wrote on social media.
Rayan was also honored by Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Dubai’s ruler Mohammed bin Rashid.
