Gold coin depicting queen of the Hellenistic period was found in an excavation in Jerusalem

A rare currency depicting Queen Vereniki II of Egypt, dating from the Hellenistic era of Jerusalem, was discovered in the city of David, according to a statement by the Israeli Authority of Antiquities (IAA). The Times of Israel website writes that the currency, discovered during work in the Givati parking lot, is made of pure gold and was cut about 2,200 years ago during the reign of Ptolemy III, when Jerusalem fell under Greek. The discovery marks according to the website the first time such a currency is discovered outside Egypt, which was the center of Ptolemaic domination. “Only about 20 such coins are known and this is the first to be discovered in a controlled archaeological excavation, making it a finding of extreme scientific importance,” said IAA’s Robert Kool and Haim Gitler of the Israeli Museum.
