As noted, the treasure hunter Kat Giles found treasures at the end of 2020, exploring a private area with a metal detector. Following the law, she transferred the artifacts to MNH. The organization’s specialists investigated the place of discovery, studied the found objects and in February assigned them the status of treasures.
The MNH says the treasures are of “international importance.” They consist of a gold bracelet, a massive silver brooch, at least one silver armband and other items. The hoard dates back to around 950 AD.

MNH archeology department curator Allison Fox says that a rare find is a gold bracelet, because the Vikings were more common with silver items than gold. According to her, gold from the ancient Scandinavians was 10 times more expensive than silver – and a bracelet could cost 900 silver coins in those days.
“I knew right away that this was a significant and exciting find. I am so thrilled to have found artifacts that are not only so important but so beautiful!” – Kat Giles, who found the treasures, shared her impressions.
