Today Rosheuvel is a successful actress, even if, as a young girl, she had other passions, first of all athletics. «I dreamed of participating in the Olympics in the decathlon. I played hockey and netball and swam for my county. I broke records in the four by four relay, in the long jump, in the javelin throw. I was doing well in every discipline ». Her dream was shattered at 16 by an ankle injury: «I was forced to take a break, so I switched to acting. The rest is history ». Have you ever had second thoughts? “Yes, when I found myself, an unemployed actress, sitting at my mother’s house watching the 2012 Olympics. Then I thought I might be there. And that I would be able to win a medal! ».
For the rest she grew up in a peaceful family, where classical music was read and listened to. “It was all tea, scones and fine dinners with excellent roasts. Even though I’m vegan now, I loved the jerk chicken, typical of Jamaican cuisine, and rice. I have been very lucky to grow up in two worlds that have been able to find a way to unite ».
While the Home Counties were hardly a multicultural melting pot, Rosheuvel never had to deal with racist incidents. Even sex has never been a problem: Roshuevel was sure from a young age that she was homosexual. “I had clear ideas, I knew what I was, it was natural.” When she was in her twenties she told her parents, there was a moment of hesitation, “but it didn’t last long.”
The triumph with Bridgerton it came after a difficult decade. His father had died two years earlier, and in May 2020 he lost his mother. “It is a tragedy that I am slowly working through. Mom has never been able to watch an episode of Bridgertonbut he could see a lot of photos and videos, his body had to give up, but his mind was sharp as a pin. It’s a real shame because she would have liked her very much. ‘ Even the most daring sex scenes? “Oh, she wouldn’t have had a problem with those. She has seen me naked and having sex on stage loads of times. And in any case, the sex scenes in Bridgerton they are not mine. ” In this difficult period, the support received by her partner, playwright Shireen Mula, is “invaluable,” says Rosheuvel. They met at a party eight years ago and have not broken up since.
After all this time sitting on a throne, however imaginary, has Rosheuvel become a supporter of the royal family? “I like to see royalty as people trying to live their life. They seem unreachable, or so we are told, but for me they are just boys and girls trying to do their thing and move on. ” Which, after all, is exactly what one could say about Golda Rosheuvel.
