Golden Globe 2021: all the winners

With the “presenters” alternating on the double stage of the Rainbow Room in New York and the Beverly Hilton Hotel and the winners in video link, almost all sitting in their living room with a half-full glass in hand, the 78esimi Golden Globe, the first at the time of the pandemic, choose to move forward by promoting inclusiveness and marking a break with a past that, too often, has preferred not to dare in order not to sacrifice the old. The evening, conducted by comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler who, thanks to technology, seemed close and in a single setting despite the location of the two coasts, saw the award of the golden globe to Chloe Zhao as best director for the film Nomadland, also awarded as best drama film, yet another confirmation of the media impact that the Venice Film Festival is able to exert on the Awards Season even from a distance. Zhao is the second woman in Golden Globe history to win in the category: it had only happened before in 1984, when Barbra Streisand took home the award for Yentl. Today, 37 years later, it is Streisand herself who cannot resist the temptation to tweet a liberating “It was time” live.

The winners among the films
Among the great losers of this edition of the Golden Globes there are two titles on which the American press believed a lot: Mank, David Fincher’s film produced by Netflix which, despite the 6 nominations, returned home with a dry mouth, and A promising woman, the Emerald Fennell film that was thought to shine at least thanks to its protagonist, Carey Mulligan, who was instead defeated by newcomer Andra Day, who lent her face to Billie Holiday in the film The United States vs. Billie Holiday. The honors, then, are all for Zhao, the second woman to win as best director but also the first Chinese to compete for the prize, who comments on the victory with a mug from her computer: “This award belongs to the entire team of Nomadland, thanks to the nomads who shared their stories. Compassion can break every barrier and create bonds and true sharing, making films gives us the opportunity to learn from each other ». From prediction, the sequel to Borat, which also gives the award to Sacha Baron Cohen as best leading actor and to the young Maria Bakalova as best supporting actress, a sign that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, criticized during the evening for not having among its jurors even a black or Asian journalist – something also remarked in the speech of thanks by Daniel Laluuya, the protagonist of Scappa – Get Out awarded for Judas and the Black Messiah –, however, managed to find the courage to reward a politically incorrect comedy such as that of the Kazakh journalist who, on a mission to the United States, tries to sell his daughter to the then Vice President Pence to bring the then President Trump closer to the leader of Kazakhstan: ” Donald Trump is disputing the result, he says that many of those who voted are actually dead, “Cohen jokes in a video link. For his incredible role in I Care a Lot, available on Prime Video, Rosamund Pike, ruthless legal guardian who sends the elderly to retirement homes to get their money’s worth, wins for best actress in a comedy. To triumph as best screenplay is Aaron Sorkin for his The Chicago Trial 7, an award that could very likely confirm also in view of the next Oscars scheduled for April 25, while in the category of best supporting actress the globe goes, aa surprise, to Jodie Foster per The Mauritanian, giving his thank you speech next to his wife in pajamas and holding the little dog Ziggy in her arms.

The posthumous Golden Globe to Chadwick Boseman
As expected, the Best Actor award went to the unforgettable Black Panther Chadwick Boseman for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, available on Netflix. It is the second time in history that an actor no longer alive has been awarded the award ((before him it only happened in 1976 to Peter Finch for the film Network) and this gives hope that his prices will rise also in view of the next Oscars. His wife collects the golden globe on his behalf Simone Ledward, who in a video link says: «If he were here he would thank the Lord, his team and all those who worked on this project. He would say something beautiful and inspiring that amplifies the little voice we have inside of us and he would say to hold on that we will make it. I don’t have his words but we must take all the moments we can to celebrate the ones we love. Honey, you are always with me ».

The triumph of Laura Pausini
I know Life ahead of him by Edoardo Ponti is forced to leave the Golden Globe for best foreign film a Threatening from South Korea, representing Italy is Laura Pausini, who wins for the song I do (Seen) by Diane Warren and Niccolò Agliardi. In connection from her home with a bright red dress and a beautiful white grand piano in the background, Laura Pausini thanks in Italian and English: “I’m so proud, I have goosebumps.” On Instagram, shortly after, Pausini writes: «I dedicate this award to all those who want and deserve to be” seen “and to that little girl who won Sanremo 28 years ago and never expected to get so far. To Italy, to my family, to all those who have chosen me and my music and made me what I am today. And to my beautiful daughter, who from today I would like to remember the joy in my eyes, hoping that she will grow up and always continue to believe in her dreams ».

The winners among the tv series
For television it is the fourth season of The Crown, and therefore Netflix, to win over both as best drama series and for its leading actors, that is Emma Corrin, who with her cat in her arms explains that “Diana taught me empathy beyond all limits”; Josh O’Connor, alias Prince Charles, who wanted to remember that he was “very lucky to have worked in a period in which many people cannot do it and feel a sense of isolation”; is Gillian Anderson, awarded for her performance as Margaret Thatcher. On the comedy front, double recognition for Schitt’s Creek as best series and best actress Catherine O’Hara (the Emmys find, therefore, confirmation), while as best actor in a drama series Hugh Grant is forced to step aside to The Undoing and let Mark Ruffalo take the honors for I Know This Much Is TrueOne face two destinies. No surprise, however, for the triumph of The chess queen, also by Netflix, awarded as best miniseries and as best actress ad Anya Taylor Joy, very excited with her blonde hair and black dress.

Jane Fonda’s speech
Finally, a final tribute to a great Jane Fonda who, in a white suit, collects the Cecil B. Demille Lifetime Achievement Award from the Beverly Hilton thanking through a speech of rare beauty: «We are a community of storytellers and in moments of crisis and turbulence the ability to tell stories has always been essential to change our mind and experience empathy. With our differences we are all human beings. Many films this year, from Nomadland a Threatening, they opened me to love and reminded me how fragile our democracy is and how small and fragile our planet is. There is a story we are afraid to see and hear and it is about the voices within our community making decisions and giving awards; we fearlessly pursue diversity. In the past we marched, it’s time again to take the stick and get back on the road ».
