The indication of “I’m Still Here ” to the Golden Globes 2025 announced this Monday (9), marked the return of Brazil to the prestigious Hollywood Foreign Press Awards. The long Walter Salles is nominated for the category of Best Film in a Non-English Language .
The last time a national production was remembered by the association in this category was in 2005, when “Motorcycle Diaries”, interestingly another work by Walter Salles, was nominated for the award. The film, starring Gael García Bernal (“The Machine”), ended up losing to the Spanish “Mar Adentro”.
As it is a co-production between Brazil and Argentina, many do not consider this indication to be legitimately Brazilian. However, The official award website attributes the nomination to Brazil .
Inspired by the travel diaries of Ernesto Che Guevara, the film narrates the trajectory of the young medical student and future revolutionary (played by Gael García Bernal) alongside his friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna from “The Lobista”). The two embark on a motorcycle adventure that takes them from Brazil to Peru, discovering along the way the deep social inequalities of South America.
They live with peasants in poverty and witness the exploitation of workers by rich industrialists. The journey reaches its turning point in a leper colony in Peru, where Ernesto undergoes a personal transformation that redefines his values and his vision of the world.
Currently, “Motorcycle Diaries” is only available for digital purchase and rental on Apple TV+ .
