Google, which owns the video hosting service YouTube, found that Groovy, the most popular music Discord bot, was violating its license agreements by demanding that the bot be terminated. The developer, of course, agreed with the requirements – already on August 30 it will be impossible to use the capabilities of the known solution. The fact is that Groovy is a tool for adding background music in Discord voice chats, and to start playing this very music, the bot used videos from YouTube, separating the music tracks from the video sequence.
For example, a user could add this bot to his Discord server, and then write the name of the track to be played in the corresponding chat. This could be the name of the composition itself, the name of a favorite group, or simply keywords, on the basis of which the necessary atmosphere was created in the voice channel where the bot was connected. And although the bot’s functions seem simple and straightforward, Groovy was incredibly popular – the bot is currently installed on 16 million servers. But Google representatives told The Verge that the bot’s developer violated YouTube’s terms by using the service for its commercial purposes.
It is important to note that Groovy completely bypasses the YouTube interface and does not play inline ads, making it possible to listen to licensed music without generating a corresponding profit for the publisher. This is probably the reason for the demands put forward. The bot developer himself said that he did not quite understand why they decided to block its development right now, because it has been functioning for a long time. It may be that Google has only just learned about Groovy, but that seems unlikely.
