THE Google announced this week a partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery to implement a subtitling solution made with the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) technology, in the United States. With the new feature, subtitles will be automatically created for content produced by the media company’s brands, such as television channels and streaming platforms.
The AI-powered subtitling solution, internally called “caption AI,” uses Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform, according to Google statement.
Automatic subtitling will initially be applied to unscripted programming of content available on Warner Bros. platforms, significantly reducing production time and costs.
Also according to the announcement, automatic subtitles will rely on human supervision to maintain accuracy and quality.
“This data-driven approach allows Warner Bros. Discovery continually refines and trains the AI captioning workflow, further reducing errors and striving to deliver consistently accurate captions,” the statement reads.
According to Google, automatic captioning will reduce caption file creation time by up to 80% compared to manual captioning.
Additionally, AI will reduce captioning costs by up to 50%, allowing resources to be allocated more effectively.
“AI has the potential to transform a variety of processes in the media and entertainment industry that drive real business impact,” adds Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud. “With its subtitling solution, Warner Bros. Discovery is seeing an example of how AI agents can save organizations time and money.”
Warner Bros. Discovery is a media and entertainment company available in more than 220 countries. The company’s products include TV channels such as Discovery Channel, TNT Sports, HBO, Food Network, TNT, Animal Planet, HGTV, TLC, TBS, Cartoon Network and CNN (International), and the streaming platforms Max and Discovery+ .
