Google and Ford want to expand the use of small radars

Radars may soon find wider applications than they are now. Google, Ford and four other partners have published specifications for the Ripple standard, which defines a single API for small radars. The platform, backed by the Consumer Technology Association, theoretically allows any device manufacturer to use the compact radar for a wide variety of tasks, from pre-existing applications such as contactless gesture control and health monitoring to exercise tracking and even detecting the presence of people in buildings.

Initially, developers will have to add custom use cases through extensions, but the Ripple team hopes to build these additions into later versions of the standard.

The involvement of Google and Ford is logical. Both have already used radar in products like the Nest Hub or the Ford Co-Pilot 360 to assist the driver. The wider the industry has support for radars, the more users are likely to pay attention to the availability of these features in devices.
