Google announces it will invest US$ 1.2 billion in technology in Latin America

Google will invest US$ 1.2 billion in technology in Latin America, according to an announcement made by Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, this Thursday (9), during the Summit of the Americas.

“It is exciting to see the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation happening across Latin America. Proud to support him with a $1.2 billion commitment to help accelerate digital transformation and economic growth across the region.” Pichai said on Twitter..

The company’s move is part of Google’s five-year commitment to invest in the region in four areas: digital infrastructure, digital skills, entrepreneurship and inclusive and sustainable communities.

According to a Google report, leveraging digital technologies in Latin America can generate an annual economic impact of $1.3 trillion by 2030 in six of the region’s largest economies: Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. The figure represents 23% of the GDP of these countries combined, the report points out.

On the digital infrastructure side, Google announced that it is working to improve connectivity and access to its products, which include “Google Search (the Google search function), Gmail, YouTube and the Cloud.

The company revealed that it intends to operationalize the “Firmina” submarine cable, named after the Brazilian abolitionist novelist Maria Firmina dos Reis. It will be the longest undersea cable in the world, connecting the USA to Argentina, capable of operating on a single energy source. The project is expected to begin execution next year.

Firmina follows three other significant cable investments in Latin America – Monet, Tannat and Curie – which also aim to bring more connectivity to the region.

Training

As part of the company’s strategy to train skilled professionals with digital skills, Google announced that it will offer 1 million scholarships for the course. “Google Career”.

“This training will help people access high-paying jobs in high-growth areas,” the company said.

Google Career Certificates are digital training programs for jobs like IT support, project management, data analytics and user experience design. No experience is required to participate in the courses, which are available on coursera.org. Scholarships are intended to cover Coursera tuition.

Sustainability and inclusion

Google also said part of the investment will go towards building more inclusive and sustainable communities. It will be $300 million over the next five years to support nonprofit organizations focused on areas such as sustainability and economic opportunity for women and youth.

The capital will be divided into US$50 million in cash donations and US$250 million in advertisements for these organizations.
