Google announces measures to combat misinformation in US election

Google has released a package of measures for the US presidential election, scheduled for November. The platform will expand its initiative to combat misinformation, in addition to moderating content generated by generative artificial intelligence and expanding protection for users considered “high risk” of a hacker attack.

“We are proud that our platforms are used by people and campaigns of all backgrounds and beliefs, and that we have built tools to keep campaigns safe online. We will continue to take steps to help keep users safe before, during, and after this year’s U.S. Election,” Laurie Richardson, Google’s vice president of Trust and Safety, said in a statement.

Reliable information

According to the company, Google’s main products have been adapted to ensure that users have access to quality information. To this end, it has partnered with non-partisan entities that will provide data on polling places and a step-by-step guide to registering to vote.

On Google search, the initiative will be implemented with an aggregate of information for all users who search within the United States. On YouTube, in turn, there will be a series of initiatives to direct users to official sources when a person searches for electoral information.

The company will also limit the use of its generative artificial intelligence, called Gemini, to prevent it from answering questions related to candidates or the election. This is because the company acknowledges that it is not able to guarantee the fidelity of the answers automatically generated by the AI algorithm.

Digital security

For candidates’ campaigns, Google has reinforced the possibility of joining the Advanced Protection Program. This tool, aimed at users at high risk of hacker attacks, offers training to managers and employees of politicians to mitigate the risk of invasion. There is also an integration of security measures and the possibility of automatically configuring Workspace to increase the protection of sensitive campaign data.

Google’s security team recently disclosed a series of attacks carried out by the APT42 group, a hacking team backed by the Iranian government, and their targeted phishing campaigns against accounts associated with Israeli military and government officials, as well as individuals associated with the US presidential election.
