THE Google postponed for January 2022 the mandatory return of its employees to the office, as well as its neighbors in Silicon Valley, due to concerns about the spread of the delta strain of the new coronavirus.
“I am pleased that many of our offices have already reopened,” said Sundar Pitsai, chief technology officer of the technology giant, “but in many parts of the world the pandemic continues to cause uncertainty.”
The mandatory worldwide return to the company’s premises was postponed to January 10, 2022 “to give more flexibility and options” to employees, he added.
“You will be notified 30 days in advance that you must return to the office,” Pitsai said.
Google’s neighbors in Silicon Valley, California, Facebook and Apple, as well as Amazon, recently made similar announcements. These companies predicted a return in the fall thanks to vaccination campaigns against COVID-19, but revised their plans due to the new wave of pandemics.
Google is also among the many companies, in the field of technology or others, that have made vaccination mandatory for their employees.
Teleworking has sparked much debate among employees who want to return to their offices and work as they did before the health crisis, those who prefer teleworking and those who prefer a hybrid model.
Since last year, Twitter has been proposing to its employees to work from home indefinitely. For his part, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg estimated that half of the platform’s workforce could work remotely in ten years.
“The pandemic is a challenge that makes us all more humble and I am very impressed with the way our teams are adapting,” Pinchai said.
The head of Google also pledged for two new breaks that the company will give to its staff worldwide, on October 22 and December 17.
