Google Chrome doesn’t have that. Microsoft Edge introduces Performance Mode to improve CPU, memory, and battery usage

Microsoft has begun testing a useful innovation in the proprietary Microsoft Edge browser for the Windows 10 operating system. We are talking about performance mode.

The new mode became available to some test takers in Microsoft Edge Canary 91 build, while others can manually activate it using a special flag.

Microsoft describes the innovation as follows:

Performance mode helps you optimize speed, response time, memory, CPU and battery usage. Performance improvements can vary based on user preferences and habits.

According to enthusiasts who tested the innovation, in “production mode” the Sleeping Tabs function is activated after five minutes of inactivity at a particular site. By default, Sleeping Tabs is activated after two hours of inactivity.

At the same time, Edge monitors resource-consuming processes running in the background, such as playing music or videos, and does not allow them to go to sleep.

As a reminder, the Sleeping Tabs feature was launched by Microsoft in the Edge browser in early 2021. It improves performance by reducing the consumption of system resources for tabs that have been left open for a long time without use.

However, the new mode affects not only Sleeping Tabs, but also some other browser settings to improve performance. However, the exact details are still unknown. In stable builds of Microsoft Edge for general users, the production mode should appear towards the end of the year.
