Google Chrome, which dominates the browser market, uses more than ten times more RAM than Safari.
Such results were shown by testing carried out by the developer of the application Flotato, which allows you to turn websites into applications for Mac.
Morten Just tested Google Chrome against Safari in a macOS Big Sur virtual machine and a 16-inch MacBook Pro laptop with 32GB of RAM.
When opening one tab from Twitter, Chrome browser consumes 10 times more RAM than Safari – 730 MB versus 73 MB. When adding a second tab with Gmail, the difference becomes even more shocking – Chrome needed 1GB and Safari needed 80MB. This test was run on a virtual machine.
A stress test with 54 tabs opened on a MacBook Pro. It’s even more impressive – Google Chrome used 24 times more RAM than Safari – 290 MB versus 12 MB for each open tab. It is noted that in all cases, all extensions were disabled.
According to StatCounter statistics, as of January 2021, Chrome accounted for 63.63% of the international browser market, while Safari accounted for 19.37%.
