Google Delays Return of Employees to US Offices Again

Google employees in the US will not be required to return to office work on January 10, as previously planned. The company’s VP of Security Chris Rackow told employees in an email that the company will re-evaluate the situation before the beginning of the new year to understand when it will be completely safe to return to the office environment. The tech giant originally planned to introduce a “hybrid work week” starting October 18, but then the deadline was pushed back to January next year.

In an email, Rakov said Google would allow specific offices to set a timeline for safely returning to work. He did not explain the company’s motives and did not mention the recently discovered Omicron COVID-19 strain. There is a lot of uncertainty about Omicron, and experts are still looking into whether it is more easily transmitted than previous versions and how much of the current vaccine protects against it.

Google, meanwhile, continues to encourage employees to work in the office and communicate in person with colleagues “where conditions permit”. Now 90% of the company’s offices are reopened in the United States, and 40% of employees have already returned to work.
