Yesterday, July 12, Google officially announced that a new client of the Drive cloud service will be presented on PCs running Windows and macOS, which will significantly simplify the process of backing up information and synchronizing files with the cloud. The new application will replace Backup and Sync for general users and Drive File Stream for business customers. At the same time, the set of functions of the new application is quite impressive – for example, the user can easily upload and synchronize their photos and videos with the Google Photos service without having to open a browser.
Moreover, the developers of the company said that now the application is able to synchronize photos, videos and even files for storage in the cloud storage from external media – from flash drives, external drives, and so on. And there was also a “mirroring” function – the user can create a conditional mirror of his files in the Drive cloud service in order to have a duplicate of important files from his computer in a virtual environment. This is a pretty handy feature – local files will be stored in the cloud, and you can quickly access them from anywhere in the world, even if the local version is not at hand.
It also became possible to synchronize local folders with the cloud – for example, you can link the PC and the cloud so that there is a “Documents” folder on Google Drive with all the fresh content. Additionally, the developers introduced integration with the Microsoft Outlook service for scheduling meetings, editing files and working in a team – the service will even show that it is editing Microsoft Office files in real time.
In the near future, Google will update applications on the systems of its users, and in the foreseeable future (within a few months) the software will receive all advanced backup and data synchronization functions.
