Google has revealed details of a new smartwatch platform, which was first announced in May with Samsung. As it turned out, the platform received the name Wear OS 3 and as an update, not so many watch models currently on sale will receive it.
Users were especially interested in whether Samsung and Fitbit watches could be worn. The first company has partnered with Google to create a new platform and is transferring its future watch models to it, and the second came under the wing of Google in January 2021. So, according to a recent Google announcement, existing Samsung and Fitbit watches will not be able to upgrade to Wear OS 3.
All watches based on the Snapdragon Wear 3100 SoC and earlier Qualcomm platforms will not get the updates, but devices with the Snapdragon Wear 4100 will be able to join Wear OS 3.
The Wear OS 3 update is slated for mid to second half 2022 (vendor dependent) for the following models:
- Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 GPS
- Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 Cellular/LTE
- Mobvoi TicWatch E3
- Future watches from Mobvoi
- Future watches from Fossil
