Google has begun to take steps to restrict the use of the popular Google Camera app (Google Camera) and Google Recorder (Google Voice Recorder) on smartphones for which they are not yet designed.

Google has started blocking the latest Google Camera on all smartphones except Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G, as well as Google Recorder

When Google released the Pixel 5 smartphone in October, one of its interesting features was the new versions of Google Camera 8.0 and Google Recorder 2.0.

Enthusiasts began distributing apps as installable files, not only on Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5, but also on older Pixel versions, including Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 4. Pixel 4 XL and Pixel 4a.

Now many users of “old” Pixels are faced with an unpleasant problem – third-party update downloads are blocked and an error is generated. For some, such updates are installed correctly, but for others, a rollback to the factory settings is required to get a new version of the application on the smartphone. At first, everything was blamed on errors in updates.

As members of the mobile developer XDA Developers have found out, bugs in the app are not the cause of the problem. Google deliberately used a new API in Android 11 to block the installation of updates from third-party sources. This is evidenced by several lines found in the update code.
