Google is working on a heavily stripped-down version of the Android operating system, MicroDroid. As described in the documentation, this is “a minimal Android based Linux image.”
The MicroDroid platform is designed for use in virtual machines. It will be even more stripped down than the open source Android GSI (Generic System Image) project, with a minimal set of components.
MicroDroid is supposed to allow running a minimal version of Android for virtualizing applications on top of a hypervisor without launching an additional full desktop environment. Another possible application is to provide separate space for different operating systems (for example, work and personal partitions) on the same device with the ability to quickly switch between isolated operating systems without losing performance.
