After Google removed the compass icon in the Google Maps app for Android back in early 2019, fans of the service were very unhappy. Almost two years later, the developers, under the pressure of users, nevertheless returned this function.
The company said it removed the compass arrow icon to “make the navigation screen cleaner,” but most users hated it. On the official Google Maps support page, the developers have confirmed that the compass will return to the Android app. It is noteworthy that in the iOS version of Google Maps, the compass icon did not disappear anywhere throughout this period of time, and this is another reason why the owners of Android devices made such a demarche.
“You wanted it and we heard you! We are pleased to announce the return of the compass to Google Maps for Android, ”reads the product support page.
However, do not expect the compass to be displayed immediately after launching Google Maps. First you need to turn on navigation along the selected route, after which the compass will appear on the right side of the screen next to other floating icons. As before, the red arrow points north to help you determine which direction to head in. Changes are available in Google Maps 10.62 and above, regardless of region.
