Dane Glasgow, vice president of Google Maps, unveiled a list of enhancements and features coming to their navigation product as early as next year. The company announced over 100 artificial intelligence-powered Maps updates to help provide the most accurate and up-to-date information about the world.

So, the first thing that catches your eye is the new interface. Previously, the platform used tabs for each type of transport: separately for driving, bus, walking or bicycle. Now, on the “Maps” screen, users will see a flat list with a “Options” button, thanks to which they can set their preferred modes of travel. In addition, a small green leaf will appear next to some route options as part of a new Google Maps strategy to promote more sustainable travel methods. When it comes to driving, the service will now take fuel efficiency into account. That is, Maps will calculate your speed, number of stops and distance in order to calculate the amount of CO2 and choose the best option for your trip.
Fuel efficient routes aren’t the only green upgrades for Kart. The company also plans to introduce alerts that will alert users to high and low emission zones. In June 2021, these features will already appear in France, Germany, Spain, the UK and the Netherlands.
It also became known that Google Maps will offer augmented reality routes. To do this, the company uses Live View, a tool that calculates a person’s orientation by scanning billions of Street View images. Previously, this function only worked outdoors. Now, being at the airport, in a shopping center or at a public transport stop, the user just needs to point his smartphone at the outside world to get information about the desired route. Thanks to artificial intelligence, the program will be able to independently calculate the height and location of objects inside the building. Live View helps you find the nearest elevator, gate, platform, baggage claim area, check-in counter, cashier, toilets, ATM machines and more. Testing of the new feature will begin in the coming months.
In addition, two new layers will appear in Google Maps: for weather and air quality. Information will be provided by the Central Pollution Board, The Weather Company and AirNow.gov. This is a very important innovation for users who travel frequently using Google navigation. And data on air quality, in turn, will help allergy sufferers avoid deteriorating well-being.
In the summer of 2021, the company plans to test a new tool for self-pickup of products. This function will calculate the exact time of the user’s arrival at the store and will transmit this information so that the order is ready by the time the customer arrives.
