In recent days, users of the Google Photos service, browsing their library, have found defects in old photos. People began to notice that there are distortions, blurs and some artifacts in images from many years ago. Some pictures were more corrupted, others less so. There doesn’t seem to be a pattern as to which types of images are affected by this issue, but all affected photos have the same corruption. For example, artifacts form random lines, and the missing part of the image is filled with black or white pixels. Many “problematic” images were uploaded to Google Photos from 2013 to 2015.
Several people have reported the issue on the Google support forum and on Reddit. According to them, photos remain corrupted even when files are uploaded to the device. It appears that the original, uncorrupted images are stored on Google’s servers, as many have been able to get rid of the artifacts by clearing the application’s cache and downloading the newly corrupted images. It is possible that during the transfer of data from the Google servers, the photos could not be fully loaded. But this is just an assumption, there has not yet been an official statement from Google.
