Google is also preparing to release smartphones with a front camera hidden under the screen. The technology is described in a recent Google patent and is different from what is expected from Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo.

This isn’t the first time that companies have used a secondary display to implement an under-screen camera. Samsung filed a similar patent earlier this year. However, Google wants to integrate this second screen in a different way.

The camera sensor and lens are placed under the screen at right angles. The second screen is located opposite the camera, it is located under the main screen and also at a right angle. A prism or mirror is placed between the camera and the secondary display, as shown in the patent image.

When the camera is not in use, the content displayed on the second screen is reflected through a prism. Once the camera is activated, the prism is rotated to collect the incident light.

The small auxiliary display also contains three sensors. Different sensors can be used, such as an ambient light sensor, a proximity sensor and an IR sensor. The latter can be used to enable 3D face detection.

The subject resource LetsGoDigital drew attention to the patent. High-quality renders based on the drawings in the patent for LetsGoDigital were created by the Indian design channel Technizo Concept.
