Google has unveiled a landmark update to its proprietary browser. The stable version of Chrome 100 is now available for all supported platforms, Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android, nearly 14 years after its original release in September 2008.

In Chrome 100, a new logo becomes available, changing for the first time in 8 years – the last change was made in 2014. The logo has become even more “flat” and minimalistic. Barely visible shadows have been removed from the 2014 version, which is more in line with the app icons of other Google services.

Also in Chrome 100, the economy mode is permanently disabled. Recall that Google added a Data Saver mode to Chrome for Android in 2014 – it allowed you to save mobile data and reduce download times by compressing web pages on the server side. In 2019, Data Saver was renamed to Lite mode back in 2019. Now Google believes that this mode is no longer needed. Note that the mode will disappear not only in the new Chrome 100, but also in earlier versions of the browser.

There have been concerns in the past that moving to version 100 could cause problems for any websites that are only designed to recognize browsers with two-digit version numbers. However, Google warned about the transition months in advance. It is logical to assume that all serious errors have already been detected and eliminated. Just in case problems still appear, Google promises that they can freeze the version number of their browser at 99 until these problems are fixed.
