Alphabet Inc’s Google confirmed on Tuesday that it had removed state-funded Russian publishers such as RT from its news-related resources, including the Google News search engine, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and several sanctions against Russia.
Kent Walker, Google’s president of global affairs, said Tuesday in a blog post that “in this extraordinary crisis, we are taking extraordinary measures to stop the spread of disinformation and stop online disinformation campaigns.”
Other digital giants, such as Meta, Netflix and YouTube, also announced sanctions measures on Russian state media content after the invasion of Ukraine.
In the case of Meta – which controls important social networks such as Facebook and Instagram – it has determined that content from accounts linked to media controlled by the Russian state will be demoted by the algorithms.
