The Google Threat Intelligence Group claims in a report on a series of phishing attacks on YouTube channels. The company attributes the attacks to hackers recruited on Russian-language forums.
Google points out in its report that most channel owners
leave email address for cooperation proposals. The cybercriminals took advantage of this and sent personalized letters to channel owners, allegedly from well-known companies with an offer of cooperation. After the victim agreed to cooperate, the malware’s landing page was emailed to the victim’s mailbox. The investigation identified 15,000 addresses from which phishing emails were sent.
After the channels were hacked, the hackers renamed them to broadcast live cryptocurrency scams. The channel name, profile picture and content were changed by hackers to brands of well-known cryptocurrency companies and exchanges. Attackers on YouTube promised users a cryptocurrency giveaway in exchange for a down payment.
“The actors behind this campaign, which we attribute to a group of hackers recruited from a Russian-language forum, are luring their target with fake collaboration opportunities. After taking over the channel, they used it to broadcast cryptocurrency fraud. ”
The hackers also sold the captured YouTube channels on closed resources. The price for the captured channel ranged from $ 3 to $ 4,000 depending on the number of subscribers.
Yesterday, CoinMarketCap admitted to leaking email addresses of more than 3 million users, but has not yet been able to find the vulnerability through which the hackers got to the base. In May, cybercriminals put up for sale data on more than 500,000 clients of the Turkish cryptocurrency platform BtcTurk.
