Google reported on the “epidemic” among Android smartphones and explained why it will not happen again

Google has summed up the measures taken regarding the “epidemic” among Android smartphones, which began in March, when many important applications simply turned out to be working.

Google has clarified that it is linking the issue to a bug in the experimental settings technology for Chrome and WebView. It caused “instability” in Android applications that use the WebView to render web content, which in turn resulted in multiple crashes.

To ensure that this kind of problem doesn’t recur, Google is going to test the WebView and related processes before launch, while at the same time improving the processes for deploying test and experimental features.

Google developers also promise that if any problems still get to users, despite all checks, then WebView will simply “roll back” to a stable state or put it into Safe Mode.

Also, the developers are going to speed up updates for Chrome and WebView in the Google Play Store so that the situation with the delay in necessary updates does not happen again when users had to resort to workarounds like removing WebView updates, actually rolling back the application to factory settings, which carries the risk of data loss for some applications.

Recall that in March, many Android smartphone users were faced with the fact that applications stopped working, opened, started giving errors, and so on. Moreover, among them there are such important ones as Gmail, numerous banking applications, Google Pay and many others. Google subsequently confirmed that the problem was with the WebView system application, which is responsible for opening web pages in applications, and has issued a special instruction for users to avoid further errors and disruptions.
