Google has warned of upcoming changes for legacy apps in the Google Play online store.
Starting November 1, 2022, all apps in the store must meet an API level no older than two years from the release of the latest major version of the Android operating system. If developers don’t bring apps in line with these requirements, Google will limit the ability for users to find and install them.
As noted by Google, this change is intended to provide a modern level of privacy and security for applications for the Android operating system.
There are a couple of important points to note. First, the restrictions will only apply if the user’s device has a more recent version of Android than the app’s API level. This way, anyone still using an older version of Android will still be able to download apps built for it. Second, Google has confirmed that users will be able to re-download and install any apps they previously downloaded from Google Play.
In addition, developers can apply for a six-month grace period if they fail to update the software by November 1st.
