Google announced the addition of the function of voice and video calls between users in the Gmail application. This function becomes available to users of the company’s mail service on devices running Android and iOS.

Google turned Gmail into a messenger with voice and video calls

The ability to make calls through Gmail has been around before. However, this feature was implemented through the Google Meet service, and users had to follow a special link created by the organizer of the call to join the conversation. Now it’s enough to press one button to contact a person from your contact list. It’s much easier because users no longer need to create, copy, and share links to join the conversation.

To start a voice or video call, you need to click on the corresponding icon with the image of a phone or video camera, which will appear in the Gmail application menu. Users who initiate a call from the Google Chat app will be redirected to Gmail, underlining the developers’ intent to make the email service the centerpiece of their communications platform.
