Google was preparing this smartphone even before the advent of the iPhone. Very green

On the last weekend of October, the original Android development team busied itself with debunking some myths about the development of the operating system – there is an opinion on the Web that this platform was released specifically to compete with the iPhone. One of the co-founders of Android, Rich Miner, assured the opposite and showed the concepts of a smartphone that was being developed even before the announcement of the very first iPhone.

Apparently, the renders depict the prototype of the legendary HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1). It is also made in the slider form factor that hides the QWERTY keyboard, but has a number of features. First of all, the abundance of green is striking – it is used not only for coloring the keyboard, but can also be seen when closed and in the indication of icons.

This is how the HTC Dream turned out in the end

The buttons are no less remarkable: the orientation of some of them differs in portrait and landscape modes – either this is a designer’s mistake, or the smartphone was supposed to use an additional mini-screen to display icons. The second assumption is made because the two buttons below the main screen are displayed with a special border, and their icons do not flip.

The Android development team has made it clear that this operating system has always been designed specifically to compete with Microsoft. Specifically, Miner says Google is looking at Android and browsers (Chrome) as a way to ensure the Redmond giant doesn’t get another foothold. To this end, the team worked on a device similar to the Blackberry (Sooner) and the Dream. The first was canceled after the launch of the iPhone.
