Google will detect the sources of greenhouse gas emissions with a satellite from space

THE Google and the environmental team Environmental Defense Fund announced a collaboration for the disclosure of the sources responsible for greenhouse gas emissionswhich will be detected by the space with a new satellite.

THE MethaneSATas Reuters reports, will be launched next month, one of several satellites being developed to monitor methane emissions around the world to identify the main sources of the invisible but strong greenhouse gas. It is a partnership led by EDF, the New Zealand Space Agency, Harvard University and others.

Data from the satellite will be available this year, and Google Cloud will provide the computing capabilities to process the information.

The information will be available through Google Earth Engine, a geospatial analysis platform. Earth Engine is free for researchers, non-profit organizations and the media.

“We believe this information is incredibly valuable for energy companies, researchers and the public sector to predict and mitigate methane emissions in components that are generally more sensitive,” said Yael Maguire, Google's vice president of geosustainability.
