Google will update ChromeOS more often

Google has announced that updates for ChromeOS, used in Chromebooks, will be released more often – once a month. In fact, the company decided to synchronize the release of updates for the Chrome browser and the operating system itself.

Google will update ChromeOS more often

The new four-week update system will begin in November 2021, when ChromeOS version 96 is released. For convenience, so that the versions of the Chrome and ChromeOS browsers match, ChromeOS 95 will be skipped – instead, ChromeOS 96 will be released immediately.

Interestingly, for business users and educational institutions, in which Chromebooks are massively used, a different kind of indulgence has been made – they will be able to use the stable version of the OS much longer than now – up to six months. This was done due to the fact that stability of work is a priority for these categories of users, and not new functions.

In connection with the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated massive departure of users to remote work and study, sales of Chromebooks in the world have increased like an avalanche. According to IDC, 13 million devices were sold in the first quarter of this year, compared to 2.8 million Chromebooks sold in the same period in 2020.
