More than 200 employees and contractors of Google parent Alphabet Inc in the United States and Canada have formed a union to advocate for their workplace rights and ethical business practices. It is reported by Reuters with reference to the leaders of the association.

They said union members would have to pay dues that would go towards organizing events, legal support and members’ salaries in the event of a strike.
The group does not intend to enter into a collective bargaining agreement with Alphabet about pay and working conditions anytime soon, as it does not include contractors that the union wants to bring to the union. They are now aiming to create a formal structure for organizing future protests, but in the meantime they have joined the larger United States Communications Workers Association.
CNN notes that this is the first union in a large technology company.
Union organizers say Google employees could theoretically go on strike, although that would be problematic and there are currently no plans to do so.
“We have always worked to create a good working environment for our employees. Of course, they protect the labor rights that we support. But, as usual, we will continue to interact directly with all our employees,” said COO Kara Silverstein.
According to CNN, the creation of the union was preceded by growing tensions among Google employees over the company’s business and operational decisions: its work with the US defense sector, plans to create a censored search engine in China and the company’s handling of complaints of sexual harassment.
