For a very long time, Google Lens, an AI-powered image recognition service from the search giant, could be installed exclusively on smartphones, but now the company has decided to go further by introducing a similar feature for PCs. Journalists for the 9to5Google news publication noted that the Lens function appears when using the web version of Google Photos, but, unfortunately, there are a number of limitations in the browser version of the application. The fact is that now the technology on the PC only allows you to recognize text on images and copy it.
For this, a special technology of optical character recognition is used, also known as OCR. But the function appears in the form of a pop-up button only if there is text on the image opened by the user – then in the upper right corner you can see the “Copy text from image” button. It is worth noting that after pressing this button, the system will start the process of character recognition and in the case of large sheets of text, this takes some time. And immediately after character recognition, the user can click on the “Copy text” button in order to use it later in any other scenarios.
If desired, the user can copy not the entire text, but only a certain fragment – for this you need to click the mouse on the desired section of the text. At the same time, of course, at the moment the desktop version of Google Lens has a fairly limited set of functions – there are much more of them on smartphones. For example, the mobile version is able to recognize book covers, musical compositions or movie posters, plants, various monuments and landmarks, and so on. Probably, all these functions will be presented in the web version in the foreseeable future, but so far there is no information about this.
