Google’s term ‘war’ hits highest search peak in 18 years

Since the deployment of Russian troops to the border with Ukraine at the beginning of February, the term “war” is one of the main topics searched on Google.

In 30 days, searches for the word ‘war’ quadrupled and reached the highest peak since 2004, the period of the US invasion of Iraq. That is, in 18 years, the term had never been so searched.

According to a survey based on Google’s online search tool, Ukraine is one of the subjects that had the highest growth in searches in the same period.

The search for information about the country, which is in Eastern Europe, jumped 1,650% in that range. Russia is one of the top five hottest topics, with growth of 850% from the beginning of February until now. The numbers only take into account research carried out in Brazilian territory.

The main characters of the war were also highlighted on the internet. In February, searches for Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, jumped 2400% compared to January.

Putin took charge of Russia after the resignation of former President Boris Yeltsin, alongside whom he grew up in politics. Before that, he had been an officer in the KGB, the secret service agency of the former Soviet Union.

From him came the order that started the war, with the first military advances of Russian troops on Ukraine.

Already searches for Volodomyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine, rose 4900%. The actor and comedian is a phenomenon on Instagram, with almost 15 million followers and had played his own role as president of Ukraine before running and winning the election, taking charge of the country in 2019.

During the war, he has used the internet and the media to urge countries like Germany, Turkey, the United States and China to try to stop Putin from advancing.

The question “what is NATO” was the most registered on Google, with a jump of 3,200% from one month to the next. Doubt was one of the ten most asked questions by Brazilians, as well as “why Russia is attacking Ukraine”, which rose 1,800%.

NATO, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was created in 1949 with the aim of forming a military network of actions and responses to world conflicts. In practice, the group of countries that make up NATO is managed with strong interference from the United States.

Members of the organization have already been urged to discuss or actually act in conflicts in countries such as the former Yugoslavia, Syria, Turkey and Iraq.

Before the war actually started, Ukraine was trying to join NATO. CNNthis may have been the final straw for Putin to declare support for breakaway regions of the country and decide to invade the neighboring nation.

On Friday (4), in an interview with CNN, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the military alliance is not part of the conflict in Ukraine and will not move troops. “We are a defensive alliance and we are not going to move NATO troops or NATO air forces into Ukraine,” he said in an exclusive interview with the anchor of the CNNJohn Berman.
