“Gossip Girl reboot”, what we understand from the first photos of the cast

A “when” is not there yet, but a “how” Hbo has tried to tell it. The American broadcaster, which during the year will launch the first reboot of Gossip Girl, posted on Instagram a portrait for each protagonist of the series to come.

The photos, each accompanied by a single word, were able and wanted to enclose the distinctive trait of each character in a single adjective. The terms chosen are not unpublished. Next to pictures of the boys, who, in New York, will have to navigate the madness of a new, and anonymous blogger, nouns such as “Power”, “Ambition”, “Money”, “Style” have appeared.

Words, all inherent to the same social sphere that, in the early 2000s, animated the Upper East Side of Gossip Girl, the original. To be different, in the virtual yearbook of the new Gossip Girl, are the faces of the protagonists: more heterogeneous, compared to what has been seen in the parent series.

The new protagonists of Gossip Girl, whose stage name was revealed together with the distinctive personality trait, are modern kids, mirror of an America that lives off its differences. Some seem to embody the ideal of the “Wasp”, of the Anglo-Saxon American, white and Protestant. Others appear to be children of the melting pot. Still others of a gender fluid imaginary that, over time, has led to the rewriting of the aesthetic (and spiritual) canons of Western society.

Gossip Girl, in its re-edition, seems to have succeeded in representing the soul of New York in a more complete and complex way, which will (also) retrace the political and social changes. How, it is not known. But, in the United States, the voice in charge of doing so will always be that of Kristen Bell.
