The federal government announced the release of R$647 million to contain the effects of the drought in the northern region of the country. The details were given by the vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin, after a meeting with ministers and parliamentarians.
The amount will be divided as follows:
- R$232 million via the Ministry of Health;
- R$ 138 for dredging, through DNIT;
- R$100 million in advance payments on amendments;
- R$61.8 million for municipalities;
- R$35 million from the Amazon Fund;
- R$35 million from the Ministry of Justice;
- R$26 million from the Ministry of the Environment;
- R$20 million from the Ministry of Defense.
This amount does not include payment for closed insurance and emergency aid, which will be released to some families.
“We have never had such a quick response from the federal government. And this will reach all families in the region”, said senator Omar Aziz (PSD-AM).
Alckmin also guaranteed that some services, such as river dredging, will be permanent through the New PAC.
“We are going to have a drought every year. So, we will have a permanent waterway plan”, stated the vice-president.
During the meeting, the first work order for dredging 12 kilometers connecting the stretch known as Tabocal to the Madeira River was signed.
“Dredging the rivers will help with the flow of the harvest and guarantee employment in the Manaus Free Trade Zone”, said the governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima (União), who was at the meeting.
