The Minister of Agrarian Development, Paulo Teixeira, told the CNN who asked the MST to leave the area occupied by Suzano, in Bahia, so that the government can mediate an agreement between the parties at a meeting scheduled for Wednesday. According to him, the movement’s response will be given tomorrow (3).
“I asked the MST, with a commitment to talk to everyone on Wednesday [1], but, to open the dialogue that the parties feel at the table, they want to resume. They are saying that this agreement was not complied with and they, as I am a mediator, cannot… I have a career diplomat by my side and a mediator cannot make any judgment between the parties”, said the minister.
“Yesterday a member of Suzano called me, asking for mediation with the MST. Then I made an appointment this morning and the vice president of the company came. As far as I know, the MST is protesting in relation to non-compliance with an agreement celebrated ten years ago and seven years ago they would have stopped complying with it”, said minister Paulo Teixeira to the CNN .
And he continued:[O representante da Suzano] he asked me for help and said he would talk to the MST if they withdrew. So I asked the MST to withdraw from the area so that this agreement could be mediated by the government”.
The minister also said that the MST had to give an answer if it would withdraw from the area this Friday (3). Asked about the situation itself, he declined to comment. “As I am a mediator, I cannot make any value judgments about the parties. Tomorrow the MST will respond and we will announce it as soon as they respond,” he said.
