The federal government changed the rules of Timemania, a lottery that benefits professional football clubs in Brazil. The change benefits clubs with the largest number of fans by increasing the distribution of the total amount collected to clubs chosen by fans.
With the changes, half of the proceeds from the lottery will be distributed equally among the 80 teams from clubs in series A, B and C and other professional teams qualified in the ranking of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
The other half will be distributed proportionally according to the bets indicated as “Team of the Heart”. In this modality, the clubs with the largest supporters are the beneficiaries. These 50% for this modality refer to 22% of the total collected for clubs.
Prizes to drawn players account for 46%.
The teams with the biggest fans, in addition to winning with the “Team of the Heart”, continue to take a part of the other 50% of the proceeds destined for the clubs.
“The change will be important especially for the periodic update of participating sports clubs, at the same time it will represent an aid for clubs with low collection capacity”, informed, in a note, the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic.
The change is the result of a change in the 2007 decree, which regulated Timemania and presented criteria for clubs to participate, and hopes to further engage fans in placing bets on behalf of their team, said the secretariat.
The lottery serves as a way for clubs to pay off their debts with the Severance Indemnity Fund (FGTS).
