The Brazilian government will again require visas for tourists from the United States, Canada, Japan and Australia. The decision was taken this Wednesday (8) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already determined that the Brazilian embassy in each of these countries officially communicates the measure to local governments.
The unilateral visa exemption for American, Canadian, Japanese and Australian tourists was granted by former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in 2019. It was a request from the tourism sector, but there was historical resistance in Itamaraty because of the principle of reciprocity.
At the beginning of the Bolsonaro government, this position was relaxed.
The four countries continued to demand the document from Brazilian citizens. In the assessment of assistants of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the exemption did not generate an increase in foreign tourists.
Between 2019 and 2022, according to sources in the Lula government, there was relative stability and even a drop in the number of visitors from the United States, Canada, Japan and Australia to Brazil.
The administrative procedures for reinstatement of the visa requirement are already being taken, but should still take a few weeks.
