The federal government estimates that it will receive at least 4.5 million tons of fertilizers by the start of the next harvest, scheduled for early October.

The amount refers to cargo already contracted from countries not involved in the armed conflict in Eastern Europe, such as Canada and Iran.

The Brazilian government forecast is that the amount, added to the total of the product already on Brazilian soil, will be enough to guarantee agricultural production until the next summer harvest.

In an attempt to increase the quantity, the Minister of Agriculture, Tereza Cristina, will travel next week to Canada, the world’s largest producer of potash.

In an interview with CNN Brazilthe minister pointed out that the North American country has signaled an increase in exports to Brazil.

“This is the product we are most concerned about and, therefore, we were already working with other potash producing countries, such as Canada, which is the largest producer. They are reactivating mines because other countries, including Brazil, will increasingly need this supply from Canada,” he said.

Brazil imports more than 80% of the fertilizers used in agricultural production. In the case of fertilizers with potassium, the dependence reaches 96%.

Today, on Brazilian soil, agribusiness has enough stock for the next three months. Every year, Brazil imports around 40 million tons of fertilizers.

Russia is one of the biggest fertilizer producers in the world, along with China, Morocco and Belarus.
