Government extends humanitarian visa for Ukrainians until the end of 2024

Ukrainians and stateless persons affected by the war in Ukraine have until December 31, 2024 to apply for a humanitarian visa in Brazil.

An ordinance that extends the deadline for the request was published this Tuesday (14), by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The temporary visa granted by the Brazilian government has a term of 180 days. The immigrant must request the document within 90 days of arrival in Brazil.

To start the process, it is necessary to present a valid travel document; the completed visa application form; proof of the means of transport used to enter the country; criminal record certificate issued by Ukraine, or, if such document is not possible, declaration of absence of criminal record.

In order for the visa to be granted, the immigrant must have a face-to-face interview with a consular authority.

After the visa is granted, the Ukrainian or stateless person can apply for temporary residence with the Federal Police. The term for residence in the country is up to two years.

For this, it is necessary to present a travel document (even if the expiration date has expired); birth certificate, marriage or consular certificate; declaration, under penalty of law, of absence of criminal record in Brazil and abroad, in the last five years.

After the period of two years of temporary residence, the immigrant may apply for residence for an indefinite period.

The process must also be carried out with the Federal Police, at least 90 days in advance of the end of temporary residence.

For the concession to take place, it is necessary that the immigrant has not been absent from Brazil for more than 90 days in each migratory year; who left and entered Brazil exclusively under Brazilian immigration control; who does not have a criminal record in Brazil or abroad; that proves means of subsistence.

The last item can be proven through an Employment Contract in force or an Employment and Social Security Card; with the presentation of a service provision contract; printed statement of salaries; proof of receipt of retirement; articles of incorporation of a company or simple partnership in operation, in which the immigrant appears as a partner or individual responsible; valid document of active registration in the Professional Council in Brazil; between others.

The immigrant who requests permanent residence in Brazil must renounce the status of refugee or give up the request for recognition of this status.

The ordinance published this Tuesday is signed by the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, and by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Luiz Iecker Vieira.
