The federal government extended the visa waiver for citizens of the United States, Australia and Canada to January 10, 2024. Before, the measure would only be valid until October 1, 2023.
The decision to exempt the aforementioned foreigners was made in the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), in 2019, unilaterally – that is, the countries continued to require visas from Brazilians. The argument at the time was the possibility of strengthening Brazilian tourism.
The decree was revoked in May this year by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) with the justification of the principle of reciprocity, which is part of the standard of Brazilian migration policy, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE). In this understanding, countries must have the same visa rules for tourists from Brazil.
The decision to extend the exemption is in a decree published this Wednesday (6) in the Official Gazette (DOU). A CNN questioned the Itamaraty about the reason for the increase in the term, but still did not receive a response.
Japan was also in the group that received the release in 2019. However, Brazil entered into an agreement with the country in August this year for a reciprocal exemption of visit visas for holders of ordinary passports traveling for a period of up to 90 days .
The exemption for this type of visa between Japan and Brazil will be valid from September 30, 2023 and will be valid for an initial period of three years.
On Tuesday (5), the MRE published an ordinance that regulated the granting of temporary visas and residence permits to citizens of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).
Participating in the group: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor.
